Southland Industries was founded in 1949 as a Long Beach-based supplier of residential heating solutions to the Southern California market. Southland has expanded its services exponentially through the years; and is today one of the nation’s largest mechanical contractors providing full design, construction, fabrication, service and maintenance for HVAC, process piping, plumbing, fire protection, controls and automation. Southland strives to provide solutions to its customers’ needs in order to improve their profitability, their environment, and the lives of their building occupants.
Before using Compete Consulting Group (CCG), Southland permitted each of its eight offices to choose its own small parcel shipping carrier, and was receiving invoices from FedEx, UPS, and Ontrac totaling in excess of $6,700 weekly; approximately $350,000 annually. Southland utilized CCG's expertise not only for rate savings, but also to provide a higher level of control over its shipping expenses by consolidating the entire company to one national shipping carrier.
CCG is saving Southland 28% on its shipping expenses; $98,000 in annual savings. CCG set up a corporate account that included all of Southland's offices in its rate structure, created uniformity in its shipping process companywide to increase expense control, and reduced time spent auditing invoices from both FedEx and UPS by their accounts payable department. CCG assisted with creating a uniform process amongst its eight offices to use FedEx for domestic and international shipments outside of the region and Ontrac for shipments within California, Arizona, and Nevada.
